Calgary Elementary School Math Contest (CESMC)

CESMC 2024 (Twelfth Annual Contest)

Introduction

The Calgary Elementary School Math Contest (CESMC) is a mathematical contest organized annually by the Department of Mathematics and Computing at Mount

Royal University. We are pleased to invite you to enter your students for the

Twelfth annual contest scheduled to take place on Wednesday April 24, 2024, for this year.

The contest is open to students in grades 4, 5, and 6 attending elementary schools in

Calgary and surrounding areas. There is no registration fee for the contest. For a student to participate in the contest, registration must come through the school that the student is attending. Registrations made by any other organizations/parties, e.g. private tutoring center etcetera, are not acceptable. The contest will be written by participants at their own school under the supervision of their schoolteacher.

The contest is divided into two levels: Level 1 and Level 2. Grade 6 students write the Level 2 contest. The Level 1 contest is intended for students in grades 4 and 5. However, if students from grades 4 or 5 would like to challenge themselves, they are most welcome to write the Level 2 contest. Levels for students should be declared in the registration forms. Once a level of interest is chosen, switching between the levels is not allowed.

The contest is 50 minutes long and consists of 20 questions ranging from easy (Part

A) to more challenging ones (Part C). All questions are in multiple-choice format.

For each question, 4 possible answers will be provided with only one of them being the correct answer. Students are required to select the correct answer.

It is important to note that this is not an examination. There is no passing or failing grade. The goal of the contest is to try to develop students’ interest in mathematics by encouraging their participation in mathematical activities. We hope that every participating student enjoys and benefits from this experience. To encourage participation, we provide some recognition to some of the high scorers, individually and as a group, in the form of medals, certificates, and trophies.

Contest Date: The contest date is Wednesday April 24, 2024.

Deadline for Entries

The registration form must be filled and sent electronically to gbhandari@mtroyal.ca on or before March 15, 2024. Late submissions will not be accepted. Also, the addition of new students to an already submitted list will not be allowed.

Procedure

Any interested elementary school needs to name a teacher as the school contest manager. The school contest manager will communicate with the contest organizers and facilitate the contest at their school. Any communication with the organizing team must come through the school contest manager. The manager’s responsibilities are as follows.

  1. Complete and submit registration form(s) with contestants’ information by the deadline. A registration form is attached with this email as an Excel file. It includes separate tabs for each level. If your school is participating in both levels, please submit registration for each level in a separate tab.
  2. Participants’ names and other information must be entered accurately and be verified before they are submitted to us. Submit only the final version of the form to the organizers. Please note that no changes, including the addition of new names or switching between the levels etc., will be allowed after we receive the registration forms.
  3. Receive the contest supplies sent to the school.
  4. Administer the contest on the contest date: Wednesday, April 24, 2024.
  5. Scan and email the completed response forms to the contest organizers for marking.
  6. Receive electronic copies of Certificates of Participation and Certificates of Distinction and distribute them.

Contest Supplies

All contest supplies will be emailed directly to school contest managers. Supplies include:

  1. Electronic copy of instructions for the school contest manager.
  2. Electronic copies of contest papers.
  3. Electronic copies of response forms with contestants’ names and their assigned IDs printed on them.

These supplies will be emailed to the provided emails of schools contest managers by Monday, April 22.

Marking

Marking will be done by the contest organizers. The results will be sent to schools sometime in May 2024.

Certificates and Prizes

  • A Certificate of Participation will be provided for each participant in the contest. These certificates will be emailed to each school contest manager right after the contest.
  • Certificates of Distinction will be awarded to students scoring in the top 25% of the contestants for each level. These certificates will be sent electronically, along with the contest results, to school contest managers after the contest papers are marked and the results are calculated.
  • School contest managers are responsible for printing and distributing these certificates to the winning students at their schools.
  • Medals and Certificates will be awarded to the top individual winners from all the contestants for each level.
  • Schools with more than 10 contestants in each level will automatically be entered to compete as a team/school. The top three schools for each level will be awarded trophies and certificates. The schools ranked 4th and 5th position will receive certificates.
  • The top individual winners and the top five schools of the contest will be invited to an award ceremony. The award ceremony will be held at Mount Royal University sometime in the middle of June 2024. The actual date and time for the ceremony will be communicated later to the schools with individual and team winners.
